Rooster Whittling

Friday – Sunday, April 25, 6pm – 8pm, April 26 and 27, 9am – 4:30pm
Take time to relax and have fun carving useful and decorative folk art projects. The instructor will demonstrate all steps of possible projects, then each student will choose what he or she wants to whittle. Projects may include: whimmy diddles, whistles, branch roosters, hens, stumps and axes.

Stucco Mosaic

Students will create a garden sculpture by constructing a framework, mixing and applying stucco and by adding a mosaic with broken pottery or tile. All experience levels are welcome.

Green Woodworking

Friday – Sunday, May 23 – 25, 9am – 4:30pm
Take a break and come learn green wood working. Students will experience historical traditional woodcraft such as shingle splitting, chair making and chair bottoming with white oak splits or hickory bark. Students can hang out and watch, ask questions or jump in and work. All work will be done with hand tools on fresh cut wood. This will be a rare creative experience students will never forget.

Books as Sculpture

This workshop will approach the book as a sculptural object. We will cover both traditional and untraditional construction methods to create ideas and book structures. The class will include slide lectures, assignments, group critiques, and discussions on what exactly makes a book a book. No experience necessary, although some basic book making familiarity could be helpful.

Lap Dulcimer Building

The Lap Dulcimer offers a gentle introduction to playing traditional music. This is your opportunity to build an heirloom quality walnut dulcimer from pre-shaped parts. No woodworking experience is necessary and all parts and supplies are provided. You will also receive several days of instruction on how to play your new creation.

Woodcarving: Animals of the Blue Ridge

Friday – Sunday, August 8 – 10, Friday 3pm – 8 pm, Saturday 9am – 5pm, Sunday 9am – 3pm
Students will learn carving safety, making various cuts with a carving knife, using resource material to capture the anatomy and personality of the subject, and finishing the carving with acrylic paint or lacquer. Beginning and novice carvers will start with a cardinal and then carve a bear. Experienced carvers can begin with a bear and then carve a deer.

Soapstone Sculpture

Learn how to carve soapstone using chisels and rasps. Discover how easy it is to create one-of-a-kind sculptures. Discussion will include: history, functionality, composition and finishing techniques. No experience is necessary.
