Intergenerational classes are intended for a combination of one parent/ guardian and one minor. The tuition fee is two for the price of one. Each pair pays the tuition indicated to cover both students’ enrollment. Material fees apply.

Blacksmithing
Kelly Smyth
Monday – Friday, June 9 – 13, 9am – 4:30pm

Want to make something you’ll use for a couple of generations? Something to pass along to the next generation? Why not forge it with the last generation? With all attention focused on traditional tools and techniques, this workshop will offer the basics with a contemporary twist. Students can expect to make a number of items, individually or together. Regardless, students will have stories to tell for years to come.

Hand Building

Monday – Friday, June 9 – 13, 9am – 12noon

Students will begin making simple things such as cups and bowl shapes pinched by hand. Students will be introduced to coil and slab building, as well as smoke pit firing at the end of class. All levels of experience are welcome.

Wheel Throwing

Students will begin making simple things such as cups and bowl shapes pinched by hand. Students will be introduced to the wheel through learning to center the clay and making bowls. All levels of experience are welcome. Age 10 +

Hand Piecing and Quilting

Monday, Wednesday and Friday, June 9, 11 and 13, 9am – 12noon

Learn the basics of traditional Hand Piecing and Hand Quilting by constructing a 12” Churn Dash block. This beginning class teaches patterns, fabric choices, etc. The instructors are patient and experienced and are eager to share their knowledge with others. This is a fun filled class with lots of tips and surprises!

Intro to Crochet

Wednesday, June 11, 1pm – 4pm

Learn the traditional art of rug-making using worn out clothing and other fabrics. Students will use strips of fabric sewn together, along with a hand-made wooden crochet hook to compose personally styled rugs.

Jewelry
Anne Vaughan
Monday, Wednesday and Friday, June 9, 11 and 13, 10am – 12noon

Intergenerational Jewelry will offer the opportunity for people of all ages to create beautiful jewelry together. This “workshop” experience is designed to be experiential and provides a setting to try new techniques, ask questions, and create as much or as little jewelry as you wish. Students will learn wire wrapping, crimping and other basic skills necessary to create necklaces, bracelets and earrings. Age Range: 4 and up.

Drawing

Learning some basic drawing skills can open many doors into the art world. Using a variety of pencils and ink pens, students will learn about contour drawing and proportion from observing natural objects, still life and each other. Students will also draw using lines and shapes to create fantasy and make believe characters using their imaginations.

Painting

Students will explore basic painting techniques, brush strokes, texture and color theory to create a few paintings of their choice. The art can range from realistic to very abstract. Students will learn how to fill an empty space with color, shapes and lines in order to create a magical work of art!

Paper Clay

Monday – Friday, July 7 – 11, 9am – 4:30pm

Students will explore the unique nature of paper clay. Its soft texture and plastic strength is especially attractive to children and their openness to exploration. Pieces made in first 2 days will be fired and ready to glaze or paint. Students will learn basic hand building and sculptural techniques in an atmosphere of focused fun-loving creative expression. Pre-Class Demo: The making of paper clay from scrap clay and paper.

Masks
Tammy Parks
Monday – Wednesday, July 14 -16, 9am – 4:30pm

A mask is anything used to hide, protect, or cover the face. The events of Carnival and Mardi Gras revolve around the creation and adornment of masks. Students will use paper clay to design their own wall mask with hollowed eyes. Focus will be placed on the forming of the major facial features—noses, chins, cheeks, etc. Later, students will create glass eyes to suspend from their masks.
