Wheel Throwing for All
Sarah McCarthy
Tuesdays and Thursdays, March 4 – 27, 3pm – 6pm

Students will learn basic techniques for making functional pottery that is thrown on the wheel. We will explore forms such as bowls, plates, mugs, and vases. More experienced throwers will learn altering techniques for creating more visually appealing pots. All levels are welcome.

Raku

Saturday and Sunday, April 12 and 13, 9am – 4:30pm

This course will focus on several methods of glazing and firing raku vessels, as well as briefly include some advanced throwing techniques. We will talk about various forms and shapes best suited for raku. We will glaze and fire them using a variety of reduction methods to produce different effects. Students should bring several bisque fired vessels ready to be glazed (non-functional pieces are recommended as finished raku pottery is not food safe).

Wheel Throwing Series

This class is for all those who would like to have their hands in clay, especially beginners. Students will learn how to throw and trim pots, glaze them and offer one another support through laughter, surprises and the sharing of frustrations and joys.

Pots for the Garden
Dandee Pattee
Saturdays, May 10 and 17, 12noon – 4pm

Come for two weekend sessions of making earthenware pots for your garden. These garden vessels will be hand-built using earthenware clay then glaze decorated for exterior durability. Pots will range in size and imagination. Plan your outdoor spot and make a pot to suit it.

High Fire

Monday – Sunday, July 7 – 13, 9am – 4:30pm

This is a high fire (cone 10) gas kiln workshop. In this week long workshop we will explore new throwing techniques, bisque our work, make high fire glazes, and at the end of the week we will fire pots thrown that week (and some brought from home) in the Center’s gas kiln. Students will learn how to load and prepare the kiln for firing, then fire to cone 10 reduction for special effects. Some knowledge of throwing and firing is recommended.

Pin and Paddle

Friday – Sunday, July 18 – 20, 9am – 4:30pm

The focus of this three day workshop will be on exploring the techniques of slab-constructed ceramic work. The majority of our attention will be directed toward the sculptural vessel; however, we will explore more functional possibilities as well. Students will learn how to form and manipulate clay using simple tools like a rolling pin and paddle. We will also discuss and demonstrate surface design elements and techniques. All levels are welcome.

Altering Functional Pots

In this class students will strengthen their throwing skills while making functional pots. Students will alter their vessels on and off the wheel to create ovals, squares, and other unique useful forms. Students will also explore how surface design enhances altered forms. Students will take home glazed and bisqued pots. All levels are welcome.

Intro to Wheel Thrown Pottery

Using the potter’s wheel, students with little or no clay experience will learn to make tumblers, mugs and bowls. Class emphasis will be on gaining the skills to make well-crafted functional pieces within the process of wheel-throwing. All levels are welcome.

Top It Off
Emily Reason
Thursday – Sunday, July 31, August 1, 2 and 3, 9am – 4:30pm

Join this class to explore “topping off” pots with functional, refined and interesting lids. Throwers will learn to make lids that fit well and complete the entire form of the pot. Students will explore variations of inset, overhanging and cap lids to understand the relationship a pot has with the lid. Appropriate lid-types in regard to the function of pots will be discussed. Students will learn to “top off,” throwing skills as well to achieve intended height, form and uniformity. Some wheel experience is required.

Pottery in the Kitchen

This class will introduce hand building techniques that allow students to work in their own kitchens or home space. Students will make kitchen ware using rolling pins, wooden spoons and other utensils. Projects will include mugs and bread pans using simple techniques that result in functional and artistic ceramic ware.

Majolica

The emphasis of this class is on surface decoration in the colorful technique of majolica glazing on red earthenware clay. Tiles, plates, small platters and bowls will be hand built to use as surfaces for painted decoration. No clay experience is necessary.

Sculpture

In this course we will use simple coil building techniques to create personal sculptural pieces related to the human form. The emphasis will be on the essence of the form and ideas of expression rather than a more classical approach. Students should have some experience working with clay or other 3D materials.

Texturing Wheel Thrown Pottery

We will use the wheel to strengthen our throwing skills to make functional pots. Our plates, bowls, cups and vases will become canvases for learning techniques to texture our pots. We will explore how texture and surface design compliment form while learning how glazes bring out our beautiful textures! All levels are welcome.

Hand Building
Aven Tanner
Tuesdays and Thursdays, October 14 – 30, 6pm – 8pm

Students will explore the fundamentals of hand building by learning basic traditional methods of pinching, coiling, and slab building. We will be working with earthenware low fire clay to make functional and sculptural objects. Students will learn a variety of decorative techniques to complete the surface of their clay creations, such as texturing, staining and glazing. We will use objects from nature for texture and inspiration. Students will be encouraged to play with the clay. All skill levels are welcome.
